Ptosis, also called blepharoptosis, is a condition in which one or both upper eyelids droop lower than their normal position. It most commonly occurs when the levator muscle—the primary muscle responsible for lifting the eyelid—weakens or its attachment to the eyelid stretches or loosens.
The drooping may be mild or may become significant enough to partially obstruct the pupil and reduce the upper field of vision. Some people compensate by raising their eyebrows, tilting their head back, or straining their forehead and neck muscles to see more clearly.
Ptosis repair is a surgical procedure that raises the upper eyelid by tightening, shortening, or repositioning the muscle responsible for lifting it. The specific technique is selected according to the cause and severity of the ptosis, the strength of the eyelid muscle, and each patient’s individual anatomy.
Dr. Rubin’s goal is to improve eyelid function and visual access while creating a balanced, natural-looking eyelid position that complements the patient’s unique facial features.
Ptosis repair is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with light sedation or general anesthesia, depending on complexity. Dr. Coombs will discuss the best option for your case at your pre-operative appointment. On the day of surgery, the eyelid is carefully marked before anesthesia is administered.
The technique used depends on levator muscle strength and the degree of lid droop. In the most common approach, an incision is made in the natural eyelid crease, and the levator aponeurosis is tightened and secured. When the levator function is minimal, a frontalis sling procedure may be used, connecting the lid to the brow muscle to assist with lifting. Lid height is adjusted intraoperatively to achieve the most accurate result.
The finest results are noticed not because you look different, but because you look naturally refreshed.

I had my tear ducts plugged 20 years ago and over time, one became fully blocked and infected. I had lived with a lump in my eyelid for the last two years. Dr. Rubin performed a 30 minutes procedure, removed all the plugs and the next day, my eyelid looks normal again! While some irritation was expected, it’s so minor. I’m so thrilled to have finally done this.![]()

Dr. Rubin was referred to me by three different people, my regular eye doctor in Hobe Sound, a friend who went to him for a procedure and also from a plastic surgeon in West Palm Beach… all three highly recommended him. I saw Dr. Rubin to have a chalazia removed from my eye lid. He also suggested that l think about having dry eye treatments, but that insurance does not cover the treatments. I have been undergoing the treatments since December, (they are almost finished. ) My dry eye syndrome feels like it is gone . I no longer wake up with burry eyesight reaching for eye drops. The treatments have made a huge difference! Dr. Rubin and his staff are fantastic. Office visits are a pleasure, the office environment is friendly, knowledgeable and supportive . I highly recommend this practice.
