Tearing & Lacrimal Disorders

Tears normally drain through small openings near the inner corners of the eyelids, travel through the tear drainage system, and empty into the nose. When any part of this pathway becomes narrowed or blocked, tears may overflow onto the cheek and cause persistent watering, irritation, discharge, or recurrent

Common Tear-Drainage Conditions

Punctal stenosis is a narrowing of the small openings through which tears enter the drainage system. It may be treated with a minor procedure called a punctoplasty, which enlarges the opening and improves tear drainage.

Nasolacrimal duct obstruction is a blockage farther along the tear drainage pathway. When necessary, Dr. Rubin may perform a dacryocystorhinostomy, commonly called a DCR, to create a new passage that allows tears to drain into the nose.

Dacryocystitis is an infection of the tear sac that may develop behind a blocked tear duct. Symptoms can include pain, redness, swelling, tenderness near the inner corner of the eye, and discharge. Treatment may include antibiotics, drainage, and correction of the underlying obstruction to help prevent future infections.

Not all watery eyes are caused by a blocked tear duct. Dry eye, inflammation, and eyelid-position problems can also contribute to excessive tearing. Dr. Rubin will evaluate the eyelids, eye surface, and tear drainage system to determine the cause and recommend the appropriate treatment.

Background/Anatomy: Tear film is essential to the health and integrity of the ocular surface. The aqueous component of the tear film is produced by the lacrimal gland (A). The tears dissipate from the ocular surface by evaporation or by flow through the tear drainage system depicted on the inner aspect of the eyelids (right).

Tear outflow system. The Punctum, (B) , is the opening on the eyelid ( upper and lower lid). Tears then pass through a tear canal (canaliculus) in the upper and lower lid (C), into the tear sac(D), down the tear (nasolacrimal) duct (E), then finally into the nose. Any obstruction along the tear drainage pathway may result in tearing or infection.

I had an excellent experience with Dr Rubin repairing my clogged tear duct. I had difficulty finding a Dr in this area who performed this type of surgery but Dr Rubin was worth the wait. The surgery was a success, and my recovery has gone smoothly thanks to the outstanding care I received. I truly appreciate the skill, attention to detail, and concern shown by both the doctor and his staff. I highly recommend this practice to anyone looking for exceptional eye care.

I highly recommend Dr Rubin. He is the best ocular surgeon in Florida. His attention to detail and talent as a surgeon is unparalleled. He also cares about his patients and takes the necessary time to explain procedures and answer questions. I have been his patient for about five years and travel 30 minutes to see him. I am so happy my doctor referred him to me.

I had my tear ducts plugged 20 years ago and over time, one became fully blocked and infected. I had lived with a lump in my eyelid for the last two years. Dr. Rubin performed a 30 minutes procedure, removed all the plugs and the next day, my eyelid looks normal again! While some irritation was expected, it’s so minor. I’m so thrilled to have finally done this.

Dr. Rubin did an amazing job fixing my eyelids. I have had a droopy eyelid for years and finally decided to get it fixed so I could see better and have it look better. He also did the other eye that appeared to be heading in that same direction. Dr. Rubin was wonderful to work with as was everyone in his office. I really appreciate his expertise and am very happy with the results. I highly recommend Dr. Rubin and his office staff for anything eye surgery related. Please see the before and after below.

Dr. Rubin was referred to me by three different people, my regular eye doctor in Hobe Sound, a friend who went to him for a procedure and also from a plastic surgeon in West Palm Beach… all three highly recommended him. I saw Dr. Rubin to have a chalazia removed from my eye lid. He also suggested that l think about having dry eye treatments, but that insurance does not cover the treatments. I have been undergoing the treatments since December, (they are almost finished. ) My dry eye syndrome feels like it is gone . I no longer wake up with burry eyesight reaching for eye drops. The treatments have made a huge difference! Dr. Rubin and his staff are fantastic. Office visits are a pleasure, the office environment is friendly, knowledgeable and supportive . I highly recommend this practice.
